One might ask: isn’t striving for a European Federal Union an unachievable utopia? Isn’t the path to this goal filled with political, institutional, and constitutional challenges? Won’t such a development face powerful opposition? And in a climate of growing skepticism toward the EU—driven by failures that have harmed security and quality of life for many—isn’t it futile to pursue a goal that feels abstract and out of reach
The path towards a Federal European State
The short answer is no. Governments are unlikely to move toward closer federalism on their own, especially in today’s global context. However, the goal of this movement isn’t immediate change. Instead, we aim to build public demand for a federal European state. Our focus is to show how this idea can solve the many crises Europe faces today.
Federalism is not an abstract solution imposed from above. It is, we believe, the only way to preserve democracy, social cohesion, and sovereignty in Europe. In today’s world, true sovereignty requires a strong state. This strength can only come from pooling the sovereignties of individual nations into a Federal Union. A federal system also better protects the sovereignty of smaller EU member states. Clear divisions of competence and authority are far superior to the current EU system. Today, larger nations dominate policymaking, while smaller nations lose influence. Decision-making remains opaque, excluding citizens from meaningful democratic participation.
Our mission is to lay the groundwork for a federal Europe. We want to involve as many Europeans as possible and show why this future is essential. Crises are emerging faster and with greater impact. A time will come when federalist ideas, if well-known and widely supported, will offer the only clear path to a livable future for Europe. At that point, political calculations will shift.
