What Sets “Together for Europe – Movement for a European Federal Europe” Apart?

A question we frequently encounter is: How does Together for Europe – Movement for a European Federal Europe differ from other European federalist organizations? The answer lies in several key distinctions that define our identity, mission, and vision for the future of Europe.

A Grassroots Movement with a Political Purpose

First and foremost, Together for Europe is not merely an advocacy group or think tank—it is a movement, a citizen initiative. Our primary objective is to mobilize Europeans at the grassroots level, uniting them into a coherent and influential political force capable of driving transformative change. We believe that real progress comes not from top-down reforms and campaigns but from the active engagement and collective will of ordinary citizens who are committed to building a stronger, more unified Europe.

A Vision Beyond Reform: Building a New Federal State

Secondly, while many federalist organizations focus on reforming the existing structures of the European Union, our ambition is different and it goes further. We do not seek to patch up the current system, of which we are not fans; instead, we aim to create an entirely new political entity—a fully-fledged European federal state. This federal state could potentially include all current EU member states, as well as any other European country that shares our core values and principles.

In cases where some European nations choose not to join this new federal structure, we envision it operating within a reformed European Union—as a sovereign, unified state among other member countries. Our goal is clear: to replace today’s intergovernmental, opaque and compromise-driven model with a democratic, efficient, and truly federal Europe.

Guided by the Rome Manifesto

Thirdly, our movement was grounded in the principles set forth in the Rome Manifesto, a foundational document which we have endorsed (with certain caveats). This manifesto outlines an essential framework for the European Federation we envision—one built on democracy, solidarity, and shared sovereignty.

Independent and Citizen-Driven

Another common inquiry relates to our affiliations: Are we connected to any European institution, political party, or initiative? The answer is a sharp “No.” Together for Europe was born out of civic frustration during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the EU appeared incapable of mounting a coordinated or solidaristic response. Originally launched as Movimento Insieme, our movement has always remained independent of party politics and receives no form of funding from the European Union or any government body.

We are composed of citizens from diverse backgrounds and political persuasions, united not by ideology but by a shared institutional goal: to build a democratic, effective, and sovereign European federal state. Our funding comes exclusively from voluntary contributions by our members—ensuring our independence and integrity.

Why We Exist

Our mission is driven by three imperatives: democracy, effectiveness, and survival. In today’s increasingly multipolar and volatile world, a fragmented Europe cannot afford to remain a loose collection of nation-states competing for influence. Only through genuine political unification can Europe assert itself as an autonomous global actor—capable of defending its interests, improving the welfare of its peoples, upholding its values, and securing its place in the 21st century.

Together for Europe – Movement for a European Federal Europe offers a bold and necessary alternative to the status quo. We invite all Europeans who share our vision to join us in building a united, powerful, and democratic future for our continent.
