Time for Europe to Rediscover Pragmatism

trump - usa elections 2024

Donald Trump has been elected as the 47th President of the United States. Yet, from a pragmatic perspective, this result is — almost — irrelevant for Europe.

For too long, we Europeans have lived under the American umbrella, which has increasingly become inconvenient for both sides.

Our American partners continue to ask, “Why are we bearing the cost of European security?” Many Europeans, in turn, are asking, “Isn’t it somewhat humiliating to lack an independent voice on crucial foreign and defense policy matters?”

Both Americans and Europeans are right. It’s time to evolve our partnership into a different, more sustainable model.

How can this deadlock be resolved? Should the USA and Europe pursue separate paths? Not at all. It is Europe that must mature, recognize reality, and understand that “to exist, Europe must unite.” In doing so, Europe—or, more precisely, the European Federal Union that Europeans will create—will become an equal and credible partner for the United States. We will defend largely the same values, share a similar way of life, but do so in an independent and autonomous way.

By taking this step, the United States will be able to count on the European Federal Union in the future, just as Europe has relied on the USA for so long.

Wake up, Europeans. It’s time to unite and move forward.
